Lac-Megantic Tragedy
The derailment of a train carrying petroleum products on the night of Friday, July 5, 2013, caused the death of 47 people and extensive damage in the municipality of Lac-Megantic.
Within a few hours, we activated our disaster plan in order to respond quickly and efficiently to our policyholders’ requests for help.
As part of our response, we deployed a mobile unit in downtown Lac-Megantic so that our claims adjusters could meet with customers affected by the disaster and provide reassurance and the support they needed, including emergency financial assistance and temporary relocation.
We also took exceptional measures to accelerate our claims process, with the objective of helping people to start getting back to normal despite the very difficult circumstances.
Finally, given the magnitude of the situation, Intact donated $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to support the organization’s disaster relief fund for the town.
