Top Frequently Asked Questions
What is my Drive?
my Drive is our insurance program that offers you a personalized discount by assessing your driving habits (braking, acceleration, and the time of day you drive) based on the number of kilometres driven. The better your driving habits, the more you could save.
Who can sign up?
If you’re insured with Intact Insurance, you own an iPhone (iOS 8.2 or later) or Android device (Version 4.3 or later) and you have a data plan, and meet eligibility criteria, you can sign up for my Drive through your insurance broker.
What's in it for me?
You’ll get a 10% discount immediately for signing up and could save up to 25% on your car insurance premium on your next renewal once you complete the assessment period (minimum 9 months). You'll also receive valuable information about your driving habits.
Can my premium go up because of my driving habits?
Your premium will not increase as a result of the data used to calculate the discount. However, on renewal you could earn a personalized discount based on your driving habits, which can range between 0% and 25%.
Is there any cost to enrol?
No. There is no charge for enrolling in the my Drive program.
What is my enrolment discount?
Your enrolment discount is applied upon enrolling into the program. We have updated our enrolment discount from 5% to 10% for all New Business policies effective May 23, 2017 and all renewal (existing) policies effective June 23, 2017.
How do I sign up?
If you already have an auto insurance policy with us, you can enrol in the my Drive program through your broker (subject to meeting the eligibility criteria). If you want to insure your vehicle with Intact Insurance and sign up for my Drive, you can get a quote on our website or contact your broker.
What type of smartphone do I need to have?
To be eligible for the my Drive, you need an iPhone with iOS 8.2/5S or later, or an Android device with version 4.3 or later. You also need a data plan with your cellular service provider, to have accurate location information while driving.
Don’t have a compatible smartphone?
We also offer the my Drive program using a device you can plug into your car’s OBD (On-Board Diagnostic ) port. Contact your broker for more details.
Can I change my mind and opt out of the program? If so, will my insurance policy be cancelled?
This program is voluntary. You may opt out at any time during the assessment period and your insurance policy will NOT be cancelled. However, as of the date you withdraw, you will no longer be eligible for the savings available with the my Drive program.
How long will my discount apply?
You will receive a 10% enrolment discount as soon as you join the my Drive program. Once your assessment period (9 months) is complete, a personalized discount will be calculated based on the driving data collected. Your personalized discount will be automatically applied on your next renewal and you will remain eligible to receive discounts as long as you continue to be enrolled in the program.
Can I register all my cars in the my Drive program?
Yes. A principal driver can register all vehicles for which he or she is identified on the policy as the principal driver, as long as the eligibility conditions are met. You'll only need to install and use the mobile app once, and we’ll apply the discount to any other vehicles that appear on the policy with you as the principal driver.
How long is my assessment period?
Your assessment period is nine months from when you first log in to the app and start driving. If the assessment period cannot be completed prior to when your renewal is issued (not the effective date of the renewal), then the renewal will be issued with your enrolment discount. The personalized discount will be applied on the subsequent renewal.
Is there a minimum number of kilometres I must drive?
In order to be eligible for a potential discount, you must drive a minimum of 1,000 km during your assessment period as the driver of the vehicle.
What happens after I sign up?
We will send an email containing a link for you to download the app onto your smartphone, along with all the information you need to log in to the app. Once installed and set up, simply drive as usual. You can view your driving profile and potential discount on the app any time you are logged in with the location services enabled.
What trips will the app record?
During your assessment period, the app will record all trips where it believes you are driving a car. You will have to go into the app and confirm whether you were the driver or not. If you do not do so, or if you do not confirm your mode of transport, the app will consider you the driver by default after seven days. Once your assessment period is completed, the app will no longer record any trips.
Which trips do I need to confirm as a driver?
You will need to confirm that you were the driver in all trips where you were driving a car, whether it’s your car or not. If you were driving a motorcycle, a recreational vehicle, or any other vehicle that isn’t a car, you need to confirm that you were not the driver and confirm your mode of transportation.
Can I delete the app when I’m done?
Yes, once you receive a confirmation email that you’ve completed the program, the app will no longer record any trips. If you keep the app, you can review your past trip information. However, you will no longer be able to confirm your mode of transport for any new trips.
What are the steps to begin the program?
After you sign up, you must download the mobile app to your smartphone. Your login details will be sent to you at the email address associated with your insurance policy. Once logged in, just start driving. Your driving data is automatically recorded and the app will determine your potential discount.
Do I need a data plan?
Yes. You must connect through cellular data to have your driving data uploaded so we can calculate your score and update your potential discount. Your trips will always be saved whether or not you are connected.
What are the other key requirements needed for the app to work?
- You must have a compatible smartphone.
- Location services in your app settings and phone settings must be turned on to record trips.
- To ensure your driving data is collected, make sure your phone battery is charged.
- Once a trip has been recorded, confirm whether or not you were the driver, as the app will consider you the driver by default after seven days. Confirming the mode of transport of a trip will allow you to see its score if you were the driver. Please note that you cannot change the mode of transport once you have chosen one.
What if I have to change phones?
If you need to change phones after you have already started your assessment period, you can just download the app on your new phone and continue your assessment from where you left off. You simply log in using the same username and password you already have.
What if I don't see any data or my results haven't changed in my dashboard?
Make sure location service is turned on in your app and phone settings. It is mandatory in order for your trips to be recorded and displayed on your dashboard. Should the issue persist, please contact our Customer Care Centre for more information at 1-855-251-6977 or email us at mydrivingdiscountontario@intact.ca
Novex customers can call: 1-855-251-6978 or email mydrivingdiscount.novex@intact.ca.
Does the app use power from my battery?
Yes. A person that drives between 1 and 2 hours per day may see the battery decrease by approximately 24 to 36%. The decrease varies across different phone models and age of the phone. That's why it’s important to have your phone charged, as you will not be able to record any trips without battery power.
Does the app use my cellular or Wi-Fi data?
Yes. Downloading the app and the app itself will use your cellular and/or wireless data. The app transfers data to calculate your potential discount. While roaming, unless your data is turned off on your smartphone, data will continue to be transferred.
The app uses approximately 40MB per month so, for a person with a standard 1GB plan, driving about 1 hour per day, this is equivalent to: a) downloading 6 songs on iTunes, b) watching 7 minutes of high-def YouTube content, c) Face-timing for 12 minutes.
The app did not record my trip. What do I do?
It may occasionally happen that the app does not record a trip because of interference with the phone’s GPS, or in areas with low cellular phone signal. If you notice this happening regularly, please contact our Customer Care Centre at 1-855-251-6977 or email us at mydrivingdiscountontario@intact.ca
Novex customers can call: 1-855-251-6978 or email mydrivingdiscount.novex@intact.ca.
What factors are taken into consideration when calculating my score and discount?
Three main factors are considered in determining your personalized my Driving Discount: hard braking, rapid acceleration, and the time of day that you drive. These factors are used to calculate a ratio in relation to the total number of kilometres driven
Hard Braking
Hard braking increases the risk of being involved in an accident. The program determines a risk factor for hard braking by calculating the ratio of hard braking events to total kilometres driven.
Rapid Acceleration
Rapid acceleration increases the risk of being involved in an accident. The program determines a risk factor for rapid acceleration by calculating the ratio of rapid acceleration events to total kilometres driven.
Time of day
The less the vehicle is used at night, the more you can save. Driving at night (between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m.) increases the risk of being involved in an accident. Many elements, such as reduced visibility and fatigue, make this time of day the riskiest. The program therefore uses the time of day that you’re driving to determine your personalized night-time driving factor.
When is my potential discount updated?
If you have your cellular data on or connected to Wi-Fi, they are both updated right after you confirm your mode of transport for each of your trips.
How can I benefit from the maximum discount?
The better you drive, the more you save. Try to avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking. But your safety must always come first: if you have to accelerate or brake suddenly to avoid an accident, don't hesitate to do so! Also, the time of day when the vehicle is used affects your discount, so the less driving you do during high-risk periods (12 a.m. to 4 a.m.), the more you can save.
If I have to brake hard to avoid an accident, will that reduce my discount?
We look for a driver's usual behaviour and the frequency of events like hard braking. We know that even the best drivers sometimes need to stop suddenly. One or two instances of hard braking will not necessarily reduce your potential discount. The most important thing is to keep you and your passengers safe. So, if you need to hit the brakes to avoid an accident, don't think twice!
What happens if I have an accident while using the my Driving Discount app?
Accidents are not taken into consideration when calculating your potential personalized discount. However, this may have an impact on your insurance premium as per our standard practices. If you have questions about your policy or premium, please contact your broker.
If I work night shifts, will that have an impact on my potential discount?
Statistically, you are more likely to be involved in an accident between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. Therefore, any driving during these hours is taken into consideration when calculating your personalized discount. However, night-time driving is just one of the risk factors that affect your potential savings. The my Driving Discount program also considers rapid accelerations and hard braking to determine your discount.
If I go over the speed limit, will this impact my potential discount?
Speed is not taken into consideration when calculating your potential discount. However, with speeding, it is more likely that you will have hard braking events and rapid acceleration. These two factors (as well as the time of day the vehicle is driven) are taken into consideration when calculating your final discount.
How can I save more?
With Intact Insurance, there are many ways to save, such as bundling your home and auto insurance. Call your broker to find out what discounts you may qualify for.
How do I know what my potential discount could be?
Once you have tagged your first trip as a driver, you can see the potential discount displayed on your dashboard in the app. The potential discount will update after each trip you tag as the driver.
Who is eligible to receive the my Driving Discount?
A principal driver who has enrolled in the program is eligible to obtain this discount for all eligible vehicles of which he or she is the principal driver.
Can I restart the program if I don't like my final discount?
No. You cannot restart the program because all the driving information has already been gathered.
Once the final discount is generated by the accumulated driving data, is it retroactive?
No. The percentage discount based on driving activity will be applied upon renewal after the completion of the assessment period, which consists of about nine months of data collection.
How is my driving data protected?
You have our firm commitment in the form of our Privacy Promise. We use care and strict security safeguards when storing or destroying your personal information in order to prevent any unauthorized access, collection, use, disclosure, copying, modification, disposal or similar risks. In the event that we transfer personal information to a third party in Canada or across borders, we contractually require that third party to protect your personal information in a manner consistent with our Privacy Promise and with legislation in their jurisdiction.
How will the driving data be used?
The collected driving data will be used to determine your eligibility and potential discount following your assessment period. We may also analyze the collected driving data to ensure consistency with your policy, and you may be contacted by your broker to see if you wish to discuss your policy further.
How long will you keep my information?
As a rule, we keep your information for as long as it is reasonable for us to do so, either for business or legal purposes.
Will Intact Insurance share my information with third parties?
Intact Insurance and our service provider will only use or share your information in accordance with the my Drive program, unless disclosure is required by law. We will never sell your information to third parties.
