Frequently Asked Questions
What does this mean for customers with optional auto insurance?
Intact Insurance will continue to provide optional car insurance until your Intact Insurance policy expires. Please contact your broker to discuss what options are available for additional auto insurance coverage. Intact Insurance stopped writing new auto insurance policies on December 1, 2020 and renewals on January 1, 2021.
What does this mean if I also have property or commercial insurance with Intact Insurance?
Your optional auto insurance coverage with Intact Insurance will end at your expiry date. Intact Insurance will remain your insurer for your property and business insurance needs and continue to work with your Broker to provide solutions for your needs.
What will happen after my optional auto insurance expires?
If your expiry date is coming up, please contact your broker and they will walk you through your options for auto insurance coverage.
What’s going on with the B.C. auto insurance industry?
We believe that consumers are best served when they have choice through competition and options for their auto insurance. With recent changes to auto insurance in B.C., the opportunities for the private sector to play a role in offering customers choice has been reduced.

What happens if I have a claim?
Customers with active Intact Insurance policies can still expect the same seamless claims service with a new or open claim. Filing a car claim at your convenience can be done through the Intact Insurance mobile app or online via our Client Centre.
We know how stressful accidents can be. That's why we will guide you through the entire claims process and get you back on track as quickly as possible. We will manage the whole process for you, from appraisal to repair and payment.
What happens with the third-party liability coverage?
Enhanced Care, the new insurance system, will expand the third-party liability coverage offered for vehicle owners who purchase their insurance policies from ICBC as of May 1, 2021.
Since part of this coverage will be included in your basic insurance provided by ICBC, Intact Insurance will only be charging customers for the coverage that is not included in Enhanced Care. As a result, we will be reimbursing customers for part of their unearned premium on their Excess Third-Party Liability coverage from May 1, 2021 to the end of their policy insurance term. Reimbursement cheques will be sent by mail mid May 2021.
How was my cheque amount calculated?
The reimbursement amount is calculated on a pro rata basis and based on the premium charged for the Excess Third Party Liability Coverage between May 1, 2021 and the end of your policy term.
Why is my reimbursement amount so small?
The reimbursement amount is calculated on the premium from May 1. Since your car insurance policy expires a few days or weeks after, your reimbursement amount reflects the shorter time period that the policy is in force after May 1.
